CONSERVATION

Pantanal

Protected Areas for Pantanal wildlife

The Pantanal is mostly privately owned, and until 1999 there were only two official government protected areas - the Pantanal National Park and the Taiamã Ecological Station – covering only 0.6 percent of the wetlands. But in the last 10 years these numbers has triply increased. The Pantanal do Rio Negro State Park and Nascentes do Taquari State Park were created and, plus three other smaller areas, covers approximately 140,000 ha.

The Natural Private Protected Areas (RPPN’s) has also multiplied. Brasilian legislation facilities and institutional projects for incentives encouraged many landowners to officially protect at least part of their area, and now the RPPN’s covers more than 200,000ha in the Pantanal.
Even establishing protected areas, the governments still faces many difficulties to manage, control and monitor them. The few employees of those governmental areas have almost no resources or equipments to work, what makes their tasks many times impracticable.

In fact, the key for conservation in Pantanal is not related to protected areas but to private lands. It is necessary to find alternatives and incentives to local people and landowners to avoid deforestation and maintain Pantanal’s unlikely rich ecosystem. The Pantanal Ecotourism is definitely one of the alternatives.
