Bonito

A National Park and Private Reserves

In the year of 2000 the Brasilian Federal Government created the Serra da Bodoquena National Park (77.232,00 ha.), the first and unique federal protected area in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. Situated in a terrain with extraordinary geological characteristics, the park objectives to protect the larger continuous remaining area of Atlantic Forest in the state and also has been recognized as extremely important to the Cerrado and Pantanal’s biodiversity conservation. The park is not opened for visitors yet, as its Management Plan (Plano de Manejo) is still been developed.

Other very important protected areas in Bonito’s region are the
Natural Private Protected Areas (RPPN’s). Those areas preserve significant forest zones and rivers systems. Some already set ecotourism activities in their areas and provides professional support for visitors coming from Bonito and other cities. Together with the National Park the RPPN’s form important ecological corridors for local ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.
