CONSERVATION

Pantanal

Pantanal Overview

The Pantanal as the largest wetland system on Earth has a major value to the quality and conservation of world’s ecologies. Biodiversity is its main attribute, sustained by a transitory cycle between aquatic and terrestrial environments. The vast interaction among its components and some important functions imminent to wetlands systems helps to preserve Pantanal’s precious biodiversity.

Cattle ranching have been an almost exclusive economical activity in the last 200 years in Pantanal, but had not an ample impact in the wetlands’ ecosystems. Local people – Pantaneiros – had a very important position in this issue and are responsible in many ways to keep the Pantanal fairly intact and still preserved.

But the Pantanal face innumerous threats at the present, and the challenge is to create new opportunities to support the environment conservation through sustainable economical activities (as the Pantanal ecoturism), as economic profits seems to be the most important thing to the world’s modern societies.

Pantanal Threats

Deforestation is the bigger problem in the Pantanal nowadays. To increase grazing areas for cattle, some ranchers are taking out primary original forests located in higher non-flooding areas, causing habitat destruction and other resulting problems like erosion and sedimentation.

But there are several other threats to be aware: overfishing (illegal catches); modern agriculture and industrial developments (mining for iron and manganese, sugar cane industries) which are taken in the surroundings but spread their effects to Pantanal’s fragile system; burning/fire (on purpose for renewing pastures); introduction of exotic species (grasses, plants, wildlife); hunting; anthropogenic impacts (like the Waterway project – “Hidrovia” – an absurd which would unbalance and change completely the Pantanal flooding cycle, causing unpredictable disastrous consequences to the environment).
