CONSERVATION

Iguassu Falls

Overview

Both Iguassu National Parks in Brazil and Argentina have a long conservation history, as per its foundations dating from 1939 and 1934 respectively. Despite the independent management and projects occurring at one or the other area, the two protected areas constitute the largest single protected remnant of the Atlantic Forest and the most splendid system of waterfalls on the planet. The effective management of the protected areas contribute to the survival of the amazing biodiversity existent in the area, and tourism ascends as a key factor for conservation as it is the main generator of income to those areas.

Threats

Iguassu Falls are relatively safe, as protected by the Brazilian and Argentinian National Parks. But threats are common and insist to rise year after year, showing that environmental conservation is an eternal issue. Deforestation and increase of agricultural areas on the surroundings, getting to the edge of the parks, is turning critical, and projects as the hydroelectric Baixo Iguaçu, which may affect the whole water system of Iguassu Falls, or the Estrada do Colono, a road to cut the most pristine and protected area of the Iguassu National Park in Brazil, where not even visitors can go, shows that conservation has a hard battle against political and economical interests still today.
