CONSERVATION

Amazon

Brazil Amazon Overview

Amazon’s importance to the world and living of mankind are countless. The Amazon rainforest plays a key element on subjects related to the integrity of global environment, climate regulation and stabilization (stores of carbon), and undiscovered biological data for science developments and discoveries in many areas of human knowledge.

The immensity of the Brazil Amazon and its peculiarities are already a challenge for conservation. Man’s pressure against the forest comes from every side, as economic development emperors in our world’s society. The need of solid investments on scientific research sounds more than reasonable. But the link to an effective conservation of the Brazil Amazon is to engage local people and governments and find appropriated tools both to gather economic development and conservation and to restrict, stop and control harmful activities to the environment in the Amazon.

Brazil Amazon Threats

Deforestation is definitely the major problem and the most dangerous threat to the Amazon. Human settlement and what they call as land “development” are responsible for the increase of deforested area every year in the Amazon. Current rates show the Amazon rainforest may be drastically reduced in 20 years. In the Brazil Amazon, the states of Pará, Mato Grosso and Rondônia stand the higher levels of deforestation. Extensive agriculture (soya beans) and pastures for cattle ranching are the main activities causing this tragic situation. Farmers’ demands for “progress” brought up controversial highway projects which are developing in the Brazil Amazon. But earlier experiences in the Amazon show that areas on the surroundings of highways have been nearly completely destroyed due the settlement and implementation of extensive “productive” areas.

Other threats are also found in the most interior areas of the Brazil Amazon, as logging, mining, biopiracy, wildlife traffic, and illegal or over exploitation of all kinds of natural resources.

The balance of the Amazonian environment is on risk. Besides deforestation, world’s climate changes and global warming, primarily caused by the burning of fossil fuels, are also crucial to the Amazon future. Rainforest can become unsustainable under drastic climate changes as increasing of temperature and reduction of rainfall. As an example, parts of the Amazon basin experienced in 2005 the worst drought in the last 100 years. The consequences of a dying Amazon, by deforestation or even natural disasters, can be catastrophic to the planet in a short term.
